The Lowest of the Low

The Cubs season can't end soon enough. Being a lifelong Cub fan, it pains me to write this, but they can't just lose, they have to lose badly to the 2nd worst team, the Pirates. I went to the Tuesday night game, it was a beautifully warm night and I had pretty decent seats. The funny thing is that I could have had almost any seat in the park because I've NEVER SEEN IT SO EMPTY. That game had the lowest attendance for the year, until last night. Stan and Terry played Danica Patrick attempting to sing the 7th inning stretch, ouch, too many fumes from that car she races. The night I went the boys from the Lemont Little League team were allowed to play catch on the field with the players before the game and also sang the 7th inning, what a mixed bag of emotions those kids must have felt, the joy of running on the beautiful field, then watching Ryan Dempster throw away a pretty decent game by throwing a wild pitch and having the Cubs sink to the lowest of the low.

You know what's the worst part of the night? The walk home. Clark Street was dead. Each bar was empty or close to it. I usually have to push my way through the crowd to run for a bus or catch a cab, but there wasn't a soul outside. I was actually a little scared, it reminded me of the time I left a White Sox game in the middle of the game and had to walk in the dark to my car with a friend who was visiting from Kentucky, she was so scared she started to cry! Tuesday I had to choke back a few tears of my own, but it wouldn't have mattered because no one would have seen them.
