Spring is the New Summer
I'm getting a little annoyed with the enormous press vacuum that is the new movie SPIDERMAN 3. I happened to see it last week at a screening and it's not that great. That's the night when I met a very hot foreign cab driver who wanted to tell me the ending of the movie because apparently it was on the black-market in his native country, but I digress. I thought Spiderman 2 was better and I don't even like adventure/comic/sci-fi/action/mysticism/period pieces/cartoons, but again I digress. My annoyance is with the movie industry pushing a summer blockbuster when it's still technically spring. I know the reasons: to beat the competition (Pirates part 3, Shrek 3, Transformers) and I'm sure another big Will Smith movie (remember when he owned the 4th of July weekend?) Also the studio wants to get a jump start so that this movie has the longest time during the hottest season, and finally to be the first official 'summer' blockbuster (as of press time, ha ha, the midnight screenings are completely sold out, damn Fandango!)
I feel that that the film industry, those creative geniuses, is getting lazy. They're not creating anything new, being too safe, and just bombarding us with ads for a recycled product. Even the television executives are getting lame. Tonight ABC is premiering a spin-off of Grey's Anatomy because apparently there aren't enough writers in Hollywood to create a show with a new premise that deserves that timeslot. We have 3 Law and Orders, 3 CSIs, and way too many reality shows (but I do love me some America’s Top Model)
Back to my point, I’m sick of Spidey. Even the stars, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten "Fangs" Dunst, showed little enthusiasm when promoting the film on Letterman. They must be bored out of their minds ( I know you can’t tell when Tobey’s bored) It's still spring, and while the actual weather in Chicago rarely acts like spring, we're still not in summer. So stop the madness; the commercials, magazine covers, the websites, the cross promotions and let me cling to spring.
